Psoriasis Systemic Therapies
Systemic therapies, in simple terms, are medication administered by mouth or injection. If you have moderate to severe psoriasis, your doctor may recommend the use of systemic therapies.
Conventional systemic therapies
Conventional systemic therapies are medicines which work on the body as a whole. The three main options are methrotrexate and acitretin which slow down the rate at which the skin cells divide; and ciclosporin which suppresses the immune systemi.
If your doctor has prescribed these treatments for you, you will need to have regular blood tests and blood pressure checks. You also need to alert your doctors to other medication which you may be taking so that you’re aware of potential interactions.
Systemic treatments come with associated potential risks. Take the time to discuss them with your doctor to address any concerns.
